Basketball CountyUntil consolidation in 1982, the only thing that meant more to fans of Logan County basketball teams than beating each other was beating Russellville. Community spirit in Adairville, Auburn, Chandlers Chapel, Lewisburg and Olmstead revolved around the schools in general and the basketball teams in particular. “Basketball County” captures the spirit of this hardwood civil war from 1932-76. The scores and individual scoring for virtually every district championship game are recorded along with stories about county tournaments, key regular season games, regional tournament action, and trips to the state tournament by Lewisburg in 1938, Olmstead in 1939 and Auburn in 1951. The first two seasons after the
resumption of girls’ basketball in 1975 and 1976 wrap up “Basketball County.” Jim Turner’s book is full of memories and local history of basketball in Russellville and Logan County.

The Natural Garden
Marie Turner brought a lifetime of education and experience to her keyboard as she wrote “The Natural Garden,” a 72-page paperback book about creating a healthy, plentiful food supply. Mrs. Turner was the founder of the environmental science department at Russellville High School. She helped her students understand botany not only in the classroom but in the greenhouse and the outdoor garden. She also wrote “Environmental Corner” for the Logan Leader for many years and was named the top columnist in the state by the Kentucky Press Association. Most importantly, she raised a robust vegetable garden through the first 50 years of her marriage. Chapters include “Site and Soil,” “Size of Garden,” “Starting seeds and Seedlings,” “Using Companion Plants,” “Popular Vegetables and How to Grow Them,” “Herbs,” “Gardening in Containers,” “Drought Gardening” and “Organic Pest Control.” Turner Valley Produce uses many of her concepts in its acres of gardening today. $5.00 plus $3.00 postage/handling
